Monty poseía buenos conocimientos musicales. Recuerdo que me resultó tan agradable que me acerqué a escucharle pero, en cunato me vio, se interrumpió y se levantó del piano. Parecía no querer compartir su música con nadie y solía negar que poseyera tal habilidad.

Su carrera comprende 17 títulos entre 1948 y 1966. Trabajó con los grandes directores (Hawks, Hitchcock, Stevens, Zinnemann, Kazan, Huston, Wyler) y las grandes estrellas (Lancaster, Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn, Brando, Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor especialmente) de entonces.
Encarnaba personajes atormentados, románticos y sensibles fijando el prototipo de rebeldía de los 50 que luego seguirían Dean, Brando y la generación de los 60 (MacQueen, Pacino). Aunque se le considera cofundador del Actor Studio's, su estilo interpretativo era en ocasiones heterodoxo, radicando su fuerza en la mirada, que proyectaba más allá de la pantalla.
Su vida personal fue tormentosa y conflictiva debido a su extremada sensibilidad y a los problemas de salud que acarrearon sus adicciones además de una homosexualidad que le costó asumir.
Dotado de una gran belleza, sufrió un aparatoso accidente de coche y experimentó el llamado "suicidio más lento" que haya visto Hollywood.
"De aquí a la eternidad" es su película más representativa. Fue nominado 4 veces a los Oscar.
