70º Aniversario del estreno de There shall be no night

Ésta es la 8ª obra de teatro en la que Montgomery Clift intervino. Se estrenó en el teatro Alvin de Broadway, tal día como hoy, el 29 de abril de 1940, hace 70 años.

Esta obra es importante en la trayectoria artística del joven Monty pues actuará con la gran pareja del teatro, el matrimonio formado por Alfred Lunt y Lynn Fontanne. Ellos supieron descubrir el arrollador talento que tenía el actor y él aprendió mucho sobre interpretación con ellos.

Monty tenía 29 años y medio.

La audición para There shall be no night

El día de su audición, Monty estaba tan nervioso que se bebió tres tazas de té. Cuando llegó a la cita concertada en el teatro Alvin, se paseó despacio y sereno por el escenario, con la cabeza muy erguida "como un principito", según alguien comentó. Vestía un traje de franela gris perfectamente planchado, de Brooks Brothers, sus zapatos estaban impecablemente limpios y sus cabellos y cutis resplandecientes. Situándose de frente como cuenta Patricia Bosworth, concedió a todo el público que se encontraba en el teatro el privilegio de una solitaria y destelleante mirada y luego estrechó la mano de Lynn Fontanne con una inclinación.

- Casi nos pareció oír chocar sus talones - comentó el actor Bill Le Massena.

Elaine Anderson, la mujer del escritor John Steinbeck, recuerda haber oído exclamar suavemente a Alfred Lunt:

"¡Mirad qué nos ha traído el viento!"

En cuanto comenzó a leer su papel, los Lunt captaron la vitalidad creadora de Monty. Aunque su instinto no estaba totalmente centrado y todavía tendía a mostrarse algo superficial, mientras leía el papel irradiaba su talento natural.

Rare souvenir program, with accompanying broadside with cast and credits listed, from a February 24, 1941 post-Broadway touring production at the Biltmore Theatre in Los Angeles of the play "THERE SHALL BE NO NIGHT" which had opened at the Alvin Theatre on April 29, 1940, running for 115 performances before having a return engagement at the Alvin Theatre on September 9, 1940, running for an additional 66 performances, before touring. Starring Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Cast also included Richard Whorf, Sydney Greenstreet, and MONTGOMERY CLIFT pictured in the souvenir program and listed in the role of "Erik Valkonen" on the double sided broadside that comes with the Souvenir Program. This 16 page souvenir program includes photos from the play, bios and photos of the playwright Robert E. Sherwood, the Lunts, the producers and is in very good overall condition for its age.

En los meses previos a There shall be no night

Montgomery Clift iba a actuar en Life with father pero le despidieron. Era la primera vez que le ocurría. Se sintió deprimido y llamó a Engel. Éste le consoló diciéndole que todos pasaban por algo así.

Andaba todavía trastornado cuando le telefoneó Leland Hayward para enviarle There shall be no night, una obra de Robert Sherwood, esencialmente propagandística en la que el autor descargaba su ira por la invasión rusa de Finlandia. La obra iba a ser dirigida por Alfred Lunt e interpretada por el matimonio formado por Alfred Lunt y Lynn Fontanne.

Se trata de una obra escrita por el crítico y editor Burns Mantle y publicada en el mismo año de 1940. Recoge la obra en la que Montgomery Clift actuó junto al gran Alfred Lunt y su esposa Lynn Fontanne.
