70º Aniversario del estreno de There shall be no night

Ésta es la 8ª obra de teatro en la que Montgomery Clift intervino. Se estrenó en el teatro Alvin de Broadway, tal día como hoy, el 29 de abril de 1940, hace 70 años.

Esta obra es importante en la trayectoria artística del joven Monty pues actuará con la gran pareja del teatro, el matrimonio formado por Alfred Lunt y Lynn Fontanne. Ellos supieron descubrir el arrollador talento que tenía el actor y él aprendió mucho sobre interpretación con ellos.

Monty tenía 29 años y medio.

Los Lunt

Alfred Lunt y su mujer Lynn Fontanne formaron una sólida pareja artística durante más de 20 años alcanzando un altísimo prestigio en Londres y Broadway.

Según la biografía de Patricia Bosworth, Monty siempre había deseado trabajar con ellos. Cada vez que los veía en el escenario, sentía que aquellos actores eran seres raramente maravillosos, capaces en cierto modo de definir su existencia a través del arte interpretativo, sorprendiéndole la vitalidad animal de sus actuaciones y su afición por trabajar ininterumpidamente.

Rare souvenir program, with accompanying broadside with cast and credits listed, from a February 24, 1941 post-Broadway touring production at the Biltmore Theatre in Los Angeles of the play "THERE SHALL BE NO NIGHT" which had opened at the Alvin Theatre on April 29, 1940, running for 115 performances before having a return engagement at the Alvin Theatre on September 9, 1940, running for an additional 66 performances, before touring. Starring Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Cast also included Richard Whorf, Sydney Greenstreet, and MONTGOMERY CLIFT pictured in the souvenir program and listed in the role of "Erik Valkonen" on the double sided broadside that comes with the Souvenir Program. This 16 page souvenir program includes photos from the play, bios and photos of the playwright Robert E. Sherwood, the Lunts, the producers and is in very good overall condition for its age.

En los meses previos a There shall be no night

Montgomery Clift iba a actuar en Life with father pero le despidieron. Era la primera vez que le ocurría. Se sintió deprimido y llamó a Engel. Éste le consoló diciéndole que todos pasaban por algo así.

Andaba todavía trastornado cuando le telefoneó Leland Hayward para enviarle There shall be no night, una obra de Robert Sherwood, esencialmente propagandística en la que el autor descargaba su ira por la invasión rusa de Finlandia. La obra iba a ser dirigida por Alfred Lunt e interpretada por el matimonio formado por Alfred Lunt y Lynn Fontanne.

Monty siempre había deseado trabajar con los Lunt. Ver post sobre la audición.

El 30 de marzo de 1933 (tal día como hoy, hace 77 años), Montgomery Clift se subía por primera vez a un escenario.

Se estrenaba As husband go, una comedia de Rachel Crothers, en una representación amateur que tuvo lugar en sarasota (Florida).

Se trata de una obra escrita por el crítico y editor Burns Mantle y publicada en el mismo año de 1940. Recoge la obra en la que Montgomery Clift actuó junto al gran Alfred Lunt y su esposa Lynn Fontanne.

Prince Monty

Foxhole in the parlor.- programa con autógrafo

Este programa de la obra de tearo Foxhole in the parlor (1945), fue firmado por varios actores, como Barbara Brewster, Russell Hardie y Grace Coppin. Y también por Montgomery Clift. Su firma es la que aparece abajo del todo y va dedicada pero no se ve bien a quién.

El telegrama de su hermana gemela el día del estreno

Monty guardó el telegrama recibido de Ethel en la noche del estreno de Eye on the Sparrow:

"Querido. Te quiero entrañablemente y te deseo fama, éxito y la mayor felicidad. Tu gemela."

Aquello tuvo lugar, tal día como hoy, el 3 de mayo de 1938, hace justo 70 años.

Éxito de Monty en Dame Nature

Días después del estreno de Dame Nature en Broadway, el nombre de Montgomery Clift apareció luminado en el Teatro Booth y Leland Hayward, el agente más prestigioso de la época, lo fichó.

[una anécdota que he recogido: Leland Hayward, empresario de la pieza musical South Pacific, y otros éxitos de taquilla de Broadway, actuó también como agente para personas como Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn y Ernest Hemingway. Negociante sagaz, siempre tratando por teléfono, manejaba tantos clientes que a muchos de ellos no los llegó a conocer personalmente. Una vez la actriz Ginger Rogers rechazó un papel que le ofrecían y Hayward, en funciones de agente suyo, irrumpió en el despacho del productor para protestar:-¡Cómo es posible que insulten a Ginger con esta basura, esta porquería, esta inmundicia...!-¡Hayward! –rugió el productor-¡Lárgate de aquí antes que te haga echar a patadas! ¡Ese guión nos lo vendiste tú mismo!]

Mientras se sucedían las representaciones de Dame Nature corrió la voz por todo Broadway de que la interpretación de Montgomery Clift era algo especial, no ortodoxo y que tenía que ser vista.

Y aunque la obra sólo tuvo 84 representaciones, todo el mundillo teatral fue a verla y se presentó entre bastidores. Todos querían ver y conocer a Montgomery Clift.

Así lo recuerda el actor James Morgan, quien hacía el papel de Batton:

- Me gustaría haber hecho una lista de los visitantes que accedieron a su camerino. Orson Welles, Ruth Gordon, Katherine Cornell, Guthrie McClintic, George Abbott, Elia Kazan...

Como se indica en la biografía de Patricia Bosworth, también entraron allí innumerables muchachas. Chicas solitarias atraídas por su belleza y talento, mujeres maduras que querían acostarse con él, agentes de bolsa de Wall Street, pianistas e incluso viajantes de fuera de la ciudad. Todos aparecían entre bastidores con el pretexto de felicitar a Monty por su actuación. Y algunos le invitaban a cenar o a una copa.

Monty encantaba a todos con su penetrante mirada.
