Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) es un escritor norteamericano perteneciente al Naturalismo. Su obra más destacada es ésta: An american tragedy (Una tragedia americana), publicada en 1926. Fue llevada al teatro y luego al cine en dos ocasiones:
* En 1931, con el título homónimo y de la mano de Josef von Sterbenrg y con la actriz Silvia Sidney. En este enlace puede verse un fragmento de la película con la famosa escena del lago.
* En 1951, que es la de Montgomery Clift.
