Stanley Kubrick a Milano in versione fotografo.

The Passion of Montgomery Clift* Prices: $60.00, £41.95 hardcover /$24.95, £16.95 paperback*352 pages, 6 x 9 inches, 13 color illustrations, 41 b/w photographs
* Availability: June 2010, Available worldwide
* Description:
From his 1948 film debut in Red River through such classics as The Heiress, A Place in the Sun, and From Here to Eternity, Montgomery Clift exemplified a new masculinity and—leading the way for a generation of actors, including Marlon Brando and James Dean—epitomized the new naturalistic style of acting. Clift's impact was such that, both during his troubled life and after his untimely death, fans described the actor in religious terms, characterizing Clift as a vision, acolyte, and martyr. In The Passion of Montgomery Clift, Amy Lawrence challenges the myth of Clift as tragic victim by examining Clift's participation in the manipulation of his image, his collaborations with directors, his relationships with costars, and his interactions with writers.* Reviews:"The art and legend of Montgomery Clift, tortured soul and triumphant talent, is brought into extraordinarily sharp focus in Amy Lawrence's discerning, sympathetic and highly readable examination of a brilliant, beautiful, haunted performer."—Lee Server, author of Robert Mitchum: Baby, I Don't Care*About The Author: Amy Lawrence is Professor of Film and Television Studies at Dartmouth College and is the author of

SERIES DESCRIPTION
The prototype for the handsome, brooding leading man later embodied by James Dean and Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift’s sensitive and soulful screen persona redefined masculinity in the 1950s and brought method acting into vogue. Though his tragic career—marked by a disfiguring car accident, struggle with alcoholism, and untimely death at age 45—has become the stuff of Hollywood legend, Clift’s stunningly modern, emotionally layered performances only resonate more with time.

The face that launched a thousand Method thesps, Montgomery Clift is best remembered as the determined American dreamer who reaches up the social ladder, ever hopeful, for Liz Taylor in A Place in the Sun. With an uncanny mixture of silk and sulk, Clift left a handful of indelible performances before his untimely death in 1966. At the opposite ends of his meteoric rise and demise, there are must-see rivers: first came Howard Hawks' Red River and his oedipal clash with John Wayne, then Elia Kazan's 1960 beaut, Wild River. And let's not forget his sad-eyed turn as the ex-boxer in WWII staple From Here to Eternity.

Lyric
Say, where did I see this guy?
In red river?
Or a place in the sun?
Maybe the misfits?
Or from here to eternity?
Everybody say, is he all right?
And everybody say, whats he like?
Everybody say, he sure looks funny.
Thats...Montgomery Clift, honey!
New York, New York, New York, 42nd street
Hustlers rustle and pimps pimp the beat
Monty Clift is recognized at dawn
He aint got no shoes and his clothes are torn
I see a car smashed at night
Cut the applause and dim the light
Monty's face is broken on a wheel
Is he alive? can he still feel?
Everybody say, is he all right?
And everybody say, whats he like?
Everybody say, he sure looks funny.
Thats...Montgomery Clift, honey!
Nembutol numbs it all
But I prefer alcohol
He said go out and get me my old movie stills
Go out and get me another roll of pills
There I go again shaking, but I aint got the chills
